Telstra 3G Shutdown

Telstra 3G Shutdown

Telstra's 3G Closure

what do you need to know?

Why?

Back in 2006, when Telstra first introduced 3G, our mobile needs were primarily calls, texts, and basic internet access. Fast forward to today, and the landscape has radically changed; as has the use of the 3G network. Telstra is making strides forward by shutting down the 3G network. This action paves the way for an optimal 5G spectrum and opens up additional digital opportunities.

What Does This Mean For You?

If your device doesn’t support VoLTE emergency calling, you will not be able to make an emergency call to 000 on the Telstra Mobile Network.   Not all VoLTE enabled devices support emergency VoLTE calling, meaning they will not be able to make an emergency call to 000 once 3G closes.
If you have a device that can only use 3G, you won’t be able to connect to Telstra's network after 31 August 2024.   If Telstra has contacted you about this, your device is affected. Without taking the recommended action you won't be able to connect to a network after
31 August 2024.
If your mobile device doesn't have Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, even if it uses 4G data, it will not be able to make voice calls on the Telstra network after 31 August 2024.   For Telstra customers: To find out if your mobile phone is impacted
SMS 3 to 3498

What Should You Do Now?

Check Your Device
Voice calls on 4G need a VoLTE-capable device on 700 MHz (Band 28). For Telstra customers: To find out if your mobile phone is impacted SMS 3 to 3498.

Check Your Settings
Check your device network is set to ‘automatic’ and VoLTE is enabled. Follow these steps:

Set Your Network To Automatic

Check Device Software
Check if you need to update your device software and firmware. It may take 5-10 minutes to update, and your device will reboot after it’s done. We recommend using Wi-Fi to reduce data usage.
